WHEN, NOT IF, a tool goes missing in or around aircraft, all flights are grounded until the foreign object debris (FOD) is located. If the tool is not located within a few minutes, a search party is deployed including the captain of the carrier. This bottleneck in mission readiness could be easily avoided with high visibility hand tools. Not to mention, tools lost in the aircraft has resulted in catastrophic mishap. This is also a reliability requirement for commercial airlines.
Survey Data on missing hand tools reports that luminescent coatings increase visibility by 57% and this time saved translates to $7.7 million for the Navy. US Patent: US20200325394A1 This coating is a durable metal composite that has passed the rigorous suite of NAWCAD Engineering tests for corrosion, adhesion, abrasion and aircraft fluid exposure (SAW AS4984B 4.1.2, 4.2.3, 4.2.5 and MIL-STD-810G).
Locating Aircraft Repairs Rapidly with Human Eye
Cold Spray Metallization is a thermal spray solid-state coating process which involves heated high-pressure gas (such as He or N2) used to propel 5-75 um sized particles of metal, ceramic, and/or polymer through a De Laval nozzle such that the particles exit at supersonic speeds where the particles plastically deform and consolidate upon impact to form a dense low porosity coating that forms a metallurgical bond into to the surface. Used for aircraft repair and Additive Manufacturing. Current NDE requires single point invisible inspection to locate CS repairs.
